Problem statement
When the printer is running, or will start printing, the pump will suck up the ink to flow to the print head. This desludging is done to make sure the printer is ready to use. This ink suction produces waste ink, which is contained in the waste ink absorber, which is located at the bottom of the printer. This mechanism runs automatically each time the printer is turned on or when printing.

Until one day, this waste ink absorber reaches a capacity of 95%, a warning will appear "Warning: The ink absorber becomes almost full, 7-segment LCD: E08" or called "Operator Call Error". When this warning appears, the printer can still continue printing, by pressing the Start (Black/Color) button when this warning appears.

Operator call error: the ink absorber is almost full or error E08, for Canon MP280, MP282, MP287, MP288
Operator Call Error

Until one day, this warning turned into an error message "Ink absorber full, error code [5B00], 7-segment LCD: P07" or called "Service Call Error". When this error occurs, the printer cannot be used, because the waste ink absorber has reached a maximum capacity of 100%, so the printer must be repaired immediately.

Service call error: ink absorber full [5B00] or error P07 for Canon MP280, MP282, MP287, MP288
Service Call Error

This error occurs in two stages
Stage 1: Operator call error, Warning: The ink absorber is almost full or E08. When this warning appears meaning, the waste ink absorber has reached 95% capacity, press the Start button (Black/Color) to continue printing.
Stage 2: Service call error, full ink absorber or P07. Warning: The ink absorber is almost full, now it turns into an error "Ink absorber full" which means the ink absorber reaches a maximum capacity of 100%.

Printer repair can be done when an operator call error occurs, or when a service call error occurs.

Solution
Because the waste ink absorber is physically full, and the waste ink counter reaches 100%, printer repairs are carried out in two stages; (1) replace the waste ink absorber kit, (2) resetting the waste ink counter to zero.

1. Replace the waste ink absorber kit
To replace the waste ink absorber, the printer must be disassembled because the waste ink absorber is at the bottom of the printer. Disassembly must be done carefully so that new unwanted problems do not occur. Follow the instructions in the image below how to do it.

1) Remove the Rear Cover Unit, Document Cover Unit,  Document Pressuree, Scanner Unit,  Cover Panel Top,  Operation Panel Unit,  Side Cover Unit, Eject Tray,  Logic Board Ass'y.

Description for pictures (3)
1. Bottom Case Unit
Wash the bottom case unit with water then dry. When the ink absorbent is full, the bottom case unit becomes very dirty, so it must be cleaned.

2. Platen Absorber (PN.QC2-8244-000)
Wash the platen absorber with water, dry it, then put it back. This platen absorber is made of foam that can be washed and reused.

3. Absorber Kit (PN.QY5-0222-000)
Replace the absorber kit with a new one. Absorber kits are the main waste ink absorber. When the ink absorbent is full, the absorber kit becomes very dirty because it is saturated with ink. So the absorber kit must be replaced with a new one. When removing and replacing the waste ink absorber, pay attention to the position of each part. Make sure that each piece of ink absorbent is installed in the original position.

After the three components above have been cleaned and replaced, reassemble the printer, and make sure the assembly is done properly to avoid unwanted new damage. After the printer assembly is complete, the next step is to reset the waste ink counter to zero.

2. Reset the waste ink counter
When this error occurs, the waste ink counter reaches 100%. Reset aims to reset the waste ink counter to zero. Reset can be done if the printer is in Service Mode. Here is How to reset Canon Pixma MP280, MP282, MP287, MP288, Pixus MP280 error Ink Absorber Full code P07 [5B00] [5B01]

STEP 1 - Enter Service Mode

Service mode operation procedures:
1)   Turn off a printer
2)   Press and hold the STOP/RESET button
3)   Press and hold the ON button (do not release both buttons)
4)   Release the STOP/RESET button (do not release the ON button)
5)   While holding the ON button, press the STOP/RESET button 5 times, and then release both the ON and STOP/RESET buttons together.

How to do step 5) While holding the ON button, press and release the STOP/RESET button 4 times, then press and hold the STOP/RESET buttons 1 time, then release both the ON and STOP/RESET buttons together.

Note:
  • When the power LED lights in green and the machine displays "0" (zero) on the 7-segment LED, it's mean the printer is ready for the service mode operation.
  • If the power LED does not turn green, the printer fails to enter Service Mode. Please, turn off the printer and then repeat Service mode operation procedures.

STEP 2 - Reset error Ink Absorber Full [5B00] [5B01]

Reset error ink absorber full with Service Tool v.1074

  • Download Service Tool v.1074
  • Extract file and open Service Tool. When an error occurs when using the Service Tool, disconnect the printer USB cable connected to the PC/Laptop, plug it back into the PC/Laptop on a different USB port.
  • Load paper A4 or Letter
  • For your reference in servicing, click EEPROM information print before resetting (1)
  • Clear Ink Counter, click MAIN (2). Wait for the printer to finish printing D=000.0. D is a Waste ink amount. D=000.0 means "The ink absorber counter has been reset to zero".

  • Turn on printer and printer ready to use.

Questions and Answers
Can the ink absorber kit be washed and reused?
Waste ink absorber is used for disposables. When the waste ink absorber is full, it must be replaced with a new one. Waste ink absorbers with part number QY5-0222-000 can be bought on the market, and we recommend not reusing old ink absorbents. But if the new ink absorber is not available on the market, and you are forced to use it again, then the old ink absorber must be cleaned. The following is how to clean the ink absorber.
1. Soak the ink absorber with water, if the water turns cloudy, replace the water with a new one. Repeat soaking until it feels clean enough.
2. Don't absorb ink or squeeze ink. The ink absorber has an air cavity. When the ink absorber is squeezed out, the air cavity will disappear, and the ink absorption will decrease. The air cavity serves to collect ink. So to clean it enough soaked which is done repeatedly.

The difference between a new absorber kit and a washed by squeezing

If the waste ink absorber is replaced with a new one, but the printer is not reset, will the printer return to normal and be used?
Even though the waste ink absorber is replaced, because the waste ink counter is not reset, the printer will still be in error and cannot be used, and when the printer is turned on, the waste ink counter value is 100% detected.

If the ink absorber is not replaced, and the waste ink counter is reset, will the printer return to normal and be used again?
Because the waste ink counter has been reset to zero, the printer will be able to be used again. However, this will cause new problems in the near future. When the ink absorber is full and is not replaced, in the near future there will be a new problem where the waste ink will overflow out of the printer because the ink absorber cannot accommodate the waste ink anymore. This can cause unwanted new problems.

Printer repair is done in two stages; replace the waste ink absorber, then resets the waste ink counter. If you have trouble doing this, we suggest asking Canon Service Center for help, or a printer repair professional.
