Canon Service Tools and Supported Printers

When a Canon printer operates for a long time (approximately 2-4 years), it will eventually cause an error: Ink absorber is almost full or ink absorber is full, with error codes: 1700/1701/1702/1703, or 5B00/5B01/5B02/5B03. When a full ink absorber occurs, repairs are carried out in two stages, namely replacing or cleaning the ink absorber, followed by resetting the waste ink counter value.

There are two ways to reset a Canon printer, manually and using software (General Tool or Service Tool.) To determine what method is used to reset a Canon printer, the printer's Service Manual is the reference. Based on the Canon printer Service Manual data that we have, then we summarize in table form (see table list below), here's how to reset a Canon printer for full ink absorption error, with error code: 1700/1701/1702/1703, or 5B00/5B01/5B02/5B03.

In this post, we will discuss the Canon printer series (S, i, iP, MP, MX, MG, iX, E, G, Pro, TS) and the Service Tool used to reset the printer.

There are 3 ways to reset a Canon printer, namely

1.   Manual Method

The manual method is how to reset the Canon printer by pressing the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button combination and the Power/ON button, alternately a certain number of times.

2.   General Tool

General Tool is a portable software that has several buttons that function to do: test print, print EEPROM data, maintenance, reset, etc.

3.   Service Tool

Service Tool is a portable software that has several buttons that function to do: test print, print EEPROM data, maintenance, reset, etc.

Here are three ways to reset a Canon printer for this type of malfunction "Warning: The ink absorber is almost full, or the ink absorber is full".

1. How to reset the waste ink counter value manually (Manual)

List of printers reset manually: see table below.

Step 1: Enter Service Mode
- The printer is off.
- Press and hold the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button.

- Press and hold the ON/Power button.

- Release the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button (the ON/Power button is still pressed)

- While holding down the ON/Power button, press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 2/3 times (see table below), then release the ON/Power button.
- Wait a moment, the ON/Power LED will flash and light green/blue. If the ON/Power LED is green/blue and not blinking, it means that the printer has entered Service Mode, and the printer is ready to be reset.

Step 2: Reset the waste ink counter value to zero
- Press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 4 times then press the ON/Power button 1 time. When the ON/Power button is pressed 1 time, look at the Power LED. If the Power LED flashes when the ON/Power button is pressed 1 time, it means that the reset has been successfully performed.

- Press the ON/Power button 1 time to turn off the printer, then wait about 15 seconds, then turn the printer back on. Done.

2. How to reset the waste ink counter value with the General Tool (GT)
List of printers that are reset with the General Tool: see table below.

Step 1: Enter Service Mode

- Connect the printer's USB cable to the computer.

- Disconnect the AC power cord from the power source.

- Press and hold the Power button.

- While pressing the Power button, connect the AC power cable to a power source (do not release the Power button).

- If the Power LED turns green, while holding down the Power button, press the Resume/Cancel button 2 times (see table below), then release both the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons at the same time.

- Wait a few moments, the Power LED will flash and light green. If the Power LED is green and not blinking, it means that the printer has entered Service Mode.

Step 2: Reset the waste ink counter value to zero
- Open the General Tool to start resetting the printer. See the table below for a list of printers that are reset with the General Tool (GT).

3. How to reset waste ink counter value with Service Tool (ST)

List of printers reset with the Service Tool: see table below.

Step 1: Enter Service Mode

- The printer is turned off, the printer's USB cable is connected to the computer, and the AC power cable is connected to a power source.

- Press and hold the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button.

- Press and hold the ON/Power button.

- Release the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button (don't release the ON/Power button)

- While holding the ON/Power button, press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 2/3/5/6 *** times (see table list below) then release the ON/Power button.

- Wait a moment, the ON/Power LED will flash and light green/blue. If the ON/Power LED is green/blue and not blinking, it means that the printer has entered Service Mode.

- While holding down the ON/Power button, press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 2 times then release the ON/Power button. Wait a while, if the ON/Power LED keeps flashing, repeat the procedure, press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 3 times.

- While holding down the ON/Power button, press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 5 times then release the ON/Power button. Wait a while, if the ON/Power LED keeps flashing, repeat the procedure, press the Stop/Reset/Resume/Cancel button 6 times.

Step 2: Reset the waste ink counter value to zero
- After the printer enters Service Mode, open the Service Tool. Use the Service Tool according to the printer model being repaired as shown in the list table below.

Q: Where can I download the Service Tool?

A: Although the data we have is not complete and not all of our Service Tools are available, the file links for the General Tool and Service Tool in the table above, you can find in the Canon Service Tool Version

Q: Can a certain type of printer be reset with a different Service Tool? Example: Canon MG2100 series. In the table mentioned to reset, use ST v.3000. Can ST v.3400 be used to reset Canon MG2100 series?

A: It says in Service Manual with code

-   QY8-13DL-000 (Aug 26, 2011) for Canon MG2100 series, MG3100 series, MG4100 series (New edition.)

-   QY8-13DL-010 (June 1, 2012) for Canon MG2100 series, MG3100 series, MG4100 series, and 2012 2H models (MG2200 series, MG3200 series, MG4200 series) added.

-   QY8-13DL-020 (Apr 17, 2013) for Canon MG2100 series, MG3100 series, MG4100 series, and 2012 2H models (MG2200 series, MG3200 series, MG4200 series) added.

To reset the printer, it says in the Service Manual

-   QY8-13DL-000 to reset use ST v.3000

-   QY8-13DL-010 to reset use ST v.3400

-   QY8-13DL-020 to reset use ST v.3400

From the information in the Service Manual document above, to reset

-   Canon MG2100 series, can use ST v.3000 or ST v.3400.
