  • Download Service Tool v.2000
  • Extract file and open Service Tool.
  • Load paper A4 or Letter
  • For your reference in servicing, click EEPROM (1) information print before resetting. Wait for the printer to finish printing, then pay attention to the value of D (D = Main waste ink absorber counter). If the value of D=100.0 means that the main waste absorber is full. Next we will reset the D value to zero.
D=100.0 Main waste ink absorber is full

  • Clear Ink Counter, click MAIN (2). Wait for the printer to finish printing D=000.0. D=000.0 means that the Main waste ink counter has been reset to zero.
D=000.0 means that the Main waste ink counter has been reset to zero
  • Click EEPROM (1) information print once again after resetting.
  • Compare EEPROM information before and after reset, look at the value of D (Main waste ink amount).
  • If all goes well, close Service Tool, turn off the printer and wait 10 seconds, then turn on printer. Done.

Questions and Answers

Q: The printer printout is bad, is the print head clogged/damaged, should I replace the cartridge?
A: A complete discussion regarding this issue, please read Troubleshooting Canon printer poor printouts

Q: If the new ink absorber kit is not available in the market, can the old ink absorber kit be used again?
A: If the new ink absorber kit is not available in the market, and you have to use it again, the old ink absorber kit must be cleaned by soaking it. Remove the ink absorber kit, then soak it in a container filled with water. If the water is cloudy, replace it with a new one. Repeat soaking until the ink absorber is clean. Dry the ink absorbent by drying it in the sun or in the air.

Q: If the ink absorber kit is not replaced or cleaned, and only reset the printer. Will the printer return to normal?
A: Because the waste ink counter has been reset to zero, the printer will return to normal, but in the near future, the waste ink will overflow out of the printer because the ink absorber cannot accommodate the waste ink anymore. To prevent this problem, replace the ink absorber kit before resetting the printer for maximum results.

Q: When using the Service Tool, error codes appear: 002, 005, 006. What should I do?
A: For a complete discussion of this issue, please read the following post Canon Service Tool Error Code Mean (Error code: 002, 005, 006, 007, 009, etc)

Q: Where can I get other Canon Service Tools?
A: For complete information regarding Canon Service Tool collection, please open Canon Service Tool Version

Q: I don't know which Service Tool supports my printer, where can I get information about it?
A: For complete information regarding Canon printers and the Service Tools used, please open the Canon Service Tools and Supported Printers

Printer repair begins with replacing the ink absorber kit, followed by resetting the waste ink counter. If you have trouble doing it yourself, we recommend asking for help from the nearest Canon Service Center, or the nearest printer repair professional.

    1. Hi.
After the printer goes into Service Mode, then opens the Service Tool, then when the EEPROM or MAIN button is pressed and the printer doesn't respond, and the Service Tool doesn't respond or freezes.

This problem occurs because the Service Tool is not detecting the printer or is unable to communicate with the printer. Open the Control Panel, check the printer status:
      - Turn ON the printer normally, open Control Panel, Devices and Printers, right click "Canon MX880 series", check "Set as default printer".
      - Turn ON the printer normally, open the Control Panel, Devices and Printers, right click "Canon MX880 series", open "See what's printing", open the "Printer" tab, uncheck "Use printer offline".

If the two settings above are correct, turn off the printer, repeat the procedure to enter Service Mode, then open the Service Tool, and reset the printer. If the Service Tool doesn't respond or freezes.
      - Move the USB printer cable that goes to the computer to a different USB port.
      - Close the Service Tool, then turn off the printer.
      - Repeat the procedure to enter Service Mode, open the Service Tool and do a reset.

If the Service Tool does not respond, the last solution is to replace the printer's USB cable with a new one.

For a complete discussion of this problem, read the post entitled "Canon Service Tool Error Code Mean (Error code: 002, 005, 006, 007, 009, etc)"

    1. Right-click Service Tool v.2000, Properties, Compatibility mode, check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7 or Windows XP (Service Pack 3)", Apply, OK. Then open the Service Tool v.2000 again. If it fails.

After running the above operation, right click Service Tool v.2000, select "Run as administrator".

  4. I am using my Surface pro with Window 10. I downloaded the file and it is on my download folder, I did right click on Properties but it does not have compatibility mode to select. It just has General, Security, Detail, and Previous Version as the top taps. Do I need to use a desktop? Thanks!

    1. If the download folder can't be opened, you can move the file to the desktop and then open it.

      Note
Chances are, Service Tool v.2000.rar is blocked by the security system.
Right-click the Service Tool v.2000.rar file, Properties, on the General tab. If under the "Attributes" there is a "Security" that displays the message "This file came from another computer ....", select "Unblock", OK. Then extract the Service Tool v.2000.rar file, then open ST.2000.

  5. Thanks so much!! Finally got this to work on my MX882. The Service Tool software wouldn't work for me since I was connected via WiFi only to my printer. Once I found a printer cable and connected to the rear of the printer (left side when looking at the printer from the rear): type B to USB (I think). A hardwired connection is required to run the Service Tool. Luckily I had an extra Cannon printer cable since I couldn't find the one this printer came with. Follow the above instructions to get it into service mode , and then launch the software when hardwired type A/B port to USB on your computer. Wow. Can't thank you enough. Beats buying a new printer when I have a drawer full of ink still.

  6. I ordered a service tool on ebay. My first challenge was that it looked like a virus to my virus checker. Being reluctant to ignore what I was being told, I prepared a sacrificial boot drive with no virus protection except windows defender and installed it there. I did have to use a usb cable and I was able to reset the counter.

Again, not wanting to ignore the "ink absorber full" warning 5B00, I decided to open up my printer to see what the fuss was all about. This was easier said than done as it snaps together and its hard to find where all the unsnap points are. I had found and downloaded the service manual "MX880 series Service Manual (MX882 / MX883 / MX884 / MX885 / MX886 / MX888) Revision 0" and this helped a lot. If you decide to do this, be sure to take a picture of each wire you plan to disconnect before you disconnect them. Also, there are a couple of wires that aren't used so be sure to label these but take a photo of where they are stashed inside the case as when reassembly time comes, you'll be glad of your notes. There aren't that many screws to deal with (perhaps 10-15) and they pretty much make sense.

The ink absorber was a huge mess with gloppy ink everywhere. I pulled them out and rinsed them out and let them dry in the sun. Then I put them back. As you pull them out be sure to take notes as it is not 100% obvious how to put them back.

I have had this printer 10 years and have liked its quality, speed, and features. But I only paid $125 for it at Costco. Unless you have a bunch of ink, this is definitely not worth the trouble. The ink is the expensive part of this printer.

I have read folks complain that Canon put a max pages counter in their product but seeing this huge ink mess, they are doing you a favor because if they let it go, you would soon have ink all over the place. Remember that the real cost of the MX882 printer is its ink.

  8. Incredibly helpful, thank you! The only hitch was in using the Service Tool -- I clicked "Main" and all the buttons went gray and there was no response. But I restarted the printer in regular mode and the ink absorber error was gone. To confirm, I started the printer again in service mode and restarted the service tool, and printed the EEPROM page...and the counter was down to d=000.3. Success! Thanks again.

  9. PS -- I downloaded the service tool (thanks for keeping up such an old version!) and had to extract it with 7-zip.
