Solution
1. Replace the waste ink absorber kit
2. Reset the ink absorber counter value

Every time the printer is turned on or every time the printer starts printing, the pump will suck ink from the ink tank and flow it to the print head. This ink suction produces waste ink, which is contained in the waste ink absorber. This mechanism always happens every time the printer is turned on and every time it starts printing.

Until one day, this waste ink absorber reaches a capacity of 95% then the error message will appear "Warning: The ink absorber becomes almost full" or called Operator Call Error. This error can still be ignored, by pressing the Stop/Reset button when the error message appears. Until one day, the waste ink absorber reaches a capacity of 100% or more, an error message will appear "Ink absorber almost full", or called Service Call Error. When the "ink absorber almost full" error occurs, the printer is unusable and needs to be repaired immediately.

Repair is done in two stages

1. Replace the waste ink absorber kit
Waste ink absorber has two parts namely main and platen absorber. The main absorber is the main waste ink absorber, while the platen absorber is the absorber of the waste plate.

The ink absorber is divided into the following four portions:
- Main ink absorber (Black): Main ink absorber for the black ink
- Main ink absorber (Color): Main ink absorber for the color ink
- Platen ink absorber (Home Position): Platen ink absorber on the home position side (on the right when seen from the front)
- Platen ink absorber (Away): Platen ink absorber on the opposite side of the home position (on the left when seen from the front).

Waste Ink Absorber Replacement
Replacement of waste ink absorber (Main and Platen ink absorber) can be done in 2 ways

(1) Easy Replacement
Only remove the right side cover and replace the main ink absorber. How?
- Remove the right side cover (4 screws)
- Release the two claws and tube, then take out the Ink Absorber Cover with the Main Ink Absorbers (Black & Color) fitted in
- Replace the ink absorbers with the new ones.

Easy Replacement the Main Ink Absorber

Easy Replacement the Main Ink Absorber

- Replace the Black Ink Absorber at the bottom.
- Install the Ink Absorber Cover with the new Ink Absorbers in the machine, and lock the claws.
- Connect the tube.
- Attach the right side cover.

(2) Regular Replacement
Remove the external housing and cap blade unit, and replace all the ink absorbers.

Question and answer
Can waste ink absorbers be washed and reused?
The waste ink absorber is designed for single use. If a new waste ink absorber is available on the market, it is highly recommended to replace it with a new one. If the waste ink absorber is not available in the market, alternative solutions are washed and dried. Ink absorption between new and used absorbents is very different. The new waste absorber has a greater ink capacity than the used absorber. If you have to wash waste ink absorbers, follow these instructions:
  • Soak the ink absorber with water. When the water becomes cloudy, replace the water with a new one. Repeat soaking until it feels clean enough.
  • Do not squeeze the ink absorber when soaking. When the ink absorber is squeezed, the air cavity inside will disappear, and the shape will become flattened. The ink absorber has an air cavity inside. This air cavity serves to collect ink. When squeezed, the air cavity will disappear so that the absorption will drop dramatically. So cleaning is done by soaking done repeatedly.
  • After being soaked, dry the ink absorber by drying or aerating it. Make sure the water content in the ink absorber is clean before replacing it.
After the printer is reassembled, the next step is to reset the waste ink absorber counter.

2. Reset the ink absorber counter value
Reset the Canon Pixma MG3100 Series (MG3100, MG3110, MG3120, MG3130, MG3140, MG3150, MG3160, MG3170, MG3180) error Ink Absorber Almost Full

STEP 1 - Enter Service Mode
Before resetting, the printer must be in Service Mode.

Service mode operation procedures:
1)   Turn off a printer
2)   Press and hold the STOP/RESET button
3)   Press and hold the ON button (DO NOT release both buttons)
4)   When the Plain Paper LED lights in green while holding the ON button, release the STOP/RESET button
5)   While holding the ON button, press the STOP/RESET button 5 times
then release both buttons together.

Note:
−     How to do step 5). While holding the ON button, press and release the STOP/RESET button 4 times, then press and hold the STOP/RESET button 1 time, then release both the STOP/RESET and the ON button together.
−     Each time the STOP/RESET button is pressed, the Alarm and Plain Paper LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Plain Paper in green. When the Plain Paper LED lights in green, the machine is ready for the service mode operation.
−     If the Plain Paper LED lights NOT in green, the printer fails to enter Service Mode. Please, turn off the printer and then repeat Service mode operation procedures.

STEP 2 - Reset Printer

6)   To reset error Ink absorber almost full used Canon Service Tool v.3400 (free, no virus, support OS Windows, Linux, Macintosh)

Canon Service Tool v.3400

Operation of Service Tool v3.400 to reset the waste ink counter

  • Download Service Tool v.3400
  • Extract file and open Service Tool. If Service Tool can't be open, unplug the USB cable and then open the Service Tool. After the open Service Tool, re-connect USB cable.
  • Load paper A4 or Letter
  • For your reference in servicing, click EEPROM (1) information print before resetting.
  • Clear Ink Counter, select ALL (2), and then click SET (3). After the ink absorber counter is reset, the counter value is printed automatically. Clear Ink Counter - select ALL means: Resets ALL the four ink absorber counters (Main_Black, Main_Color, Platen_Away, Platen_Home).
  • Select the destination, Region (4): ASA, AUS, BRA, CHN, CND, EMB, EUR, JPN, KOR, LTN, TWN, USA and then Click SET (5)
  • Click EEPROM (1) information print once again after resetting.
  • Compare EEPROM information before and after reset.
How to read the EEPROM information print
Print the EEPROM information, and check the "D" and “Dp” (ink absorber counter) and "DF" (ink absorber life) values.

Step 1: Is "D" or “Dp” 80% or more?
Yes (80% or more) -> Replace the ink absorber.
No (less than 80%) -> Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Is "DF" 24 or more?
No (less than 24 months) -> Replace the ink absorber.
Yes (24 months or more) -> No need to replace the ink absorber.

Note: If the "ST" (installation date) value is 2011/07/31 earlier, the "DF" (ink absorber life) value is incorrect. Skip Step 2. The ink absorber life is an estimated value calculated based on the user's machine usage.
How to read the EEPROM information print

  • If all goes well (D=000.0) close the Service Tool
  • Turn off the printer (wait for 10 seconds)
  • Turn on printer and printer ready to use

Question and answer
What if only the Main ink absorber was replaced, while the Platen ink absorber was not replaced?
When the error occurs indicating that the ink absorber is full, check the life of all the four ink absorbers (DF values in the EEPROM information print) first, and determine whether other ink absorbers than the full one be replaced at the same time (as prevention of another error in a short period of time).

If the Main and Platen ink absorber is replaced and the printer is not reset, will the printer return to normal?
Because resetting the ink absorber counter is not done, the printer will still be error and cannot be used, even though the physical main and platen ink absorber has been replaced.

If Main and Platen ink absorber is not replaced and the printer is only reset, will the printer be normal again?
Because the ink absorber counter has been reset to zero, the printer will return to normal and can be used, but in the near future, there will be a new problem where the waste ink will overflow because the ink absorber is full. Waste ink that spills out of the printer will cause unwanted problems.

Waste ink absorber replacement followed by waste ink counter reset is the best solution to overcome the problem. If you have trouble doing it yourself, we recommend asking Canon Service Center for help or a printer repair professional.
