How to Repair the Canon Pixma iP2700, iP2702, iP2770, iP2772, iP2780 error Ink Absorber Full [5B01, 5B00]

Problem description
When the printer is turned on or each printer will print, the pump will suck ink from the print head to ensure printing is ready. This ink suction produces waste ink which is contained in the ink absorber kit. This procedure will always be performed every time the printer is turned on or starts printing. Until one day the printer error message appears "Warning: The ink absorber becomes almost full". This error is a warning that the waste ink absorber is almost full (estimated to be around 95%) or called the "Operator Call Error". When this warning appears, printing can still be done by pressing the Resume/Cancel button, to ignore this warning for a while. Until one day this warning turns into an error "Ink absorber full, error code [5B00]" or called "Service Call Errors". When this error appears, the printer can no longer be used and the problem should be fixed immediately.

Solution
The error message "Ink absorber full, error code [5B00]" means that the waste ink absorber is physically saturated with ink, and the waste ink counter has reached the maximum number (100% or less). Because there are two problems that must be resolved, printer repairs are carried out in two stages.
(1)  Replace the ink absorber kit
(2)  Reset the ink absorber counter
Below is further discussion on how to repair the Canon Pixma iP2700, iP2702, iP2770, iP2772, iP2780, error the Ink Absorber Full [error code: 5B00].

(1)  Replace the ink absorber kit
Replacement of the waste ink absorber can be done in two ways:

1) Partial Replacement
Partial replacement is removed the external housing (a set of the ASF cover, front cover, and middle frame), then replace the ink absorber. This is the easiest and fastest way to replace the waste ink absorber.

How to perform the partial replacement
i. Remove the external housing by remove 4 screws, then remove a set of the ASF cover, front cover, and middle frame.

iii. Install 2 pieces of the new ink absorber (QC2-8308), with one on top of the other, though only one is installed when shipped from the production site. The amount of ink absorbed by 2 pieces of new ink absorbers is 80%.

iv. After the new ink absorber has been installed, install the printer cover.

2) Whole replacement
To make a replacement, the printer must be completely disassembled, because the waste ink absorber is at the bottom of the printer by removing the external housing and printer unit, then replace all the ink absorbers.

Note: Keep in mind, the disassembly must be done carefully and make sure the assembly must be done properly.

After the ink absorber kit is replaced, the next step is to reset the waste ink counter to zero. Follow the instructions below how to do it.

(2)  Reset the ink absorber counter
After the ink absorber kit is replaced with a new one and the printer is reassembled, the next step is to reset the ink absorber counter. Before resetting, the printer must be in Service Mode.

STEP 1 - Enter the Service Mode

Service mode operation procedures:
1)   Turn off a printer
2)   Press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button
3)   Press and hold the ON button (do not release both buttons)
4)   Release the RESUME/CANCEL button (do not release the ON button)
5)   While holding the ON button, press the RESUME/CANCEL button 5 times, and then release both the ON and RESUME/CANCEL buttons together.

Note:

  • How to do point 5) While holding the ON button, press and release the RESUME/CANCEL button 4 times, then press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button 1 time, then release both the ON and RESUME/CANCEL buttons together.
  • If the Power LED does not turn green, the printer fails to enter Service Mode. Please, turn off the printer and then repeat it from the beginning.

STEP 2 - Reset Printer
To reset error Ink Absorber Full [5B01, 5B00] can be done with Canon Service Tool v.1074
  • Download the Canon Service Tool v.1074
  • Extract file and open Service Tool. If Service Tool can't be open, unplug the USB cable and then open the Service Tool. After the open Service Tool, re-connect USB cable.

  • For your reference in servicing, click EEPROM (1) information print before resetting.
  • Clear Ink Counter, click MAIN (2). Wait for the printer to finish printing D=000.0. D is the MAIN waste ink amount. D=000.0 means "The main ink absorber counter has been reset to zero".

  • Clear Ink Counter, click PLATEN (3) to reset the platen waste ink counter. When the MAIN and PLATEN buttons are clicked, the light will blink, as a sign that the reset has been done.

D = Waste ink absorber counter value
DF = 00039 (It indicates that there will be 39 months before the ink absorber becomes full.)
  • If all goes well (waste ink absorber counter value or D=000.0), close the Service Tool
  • Turn off the printer (wait 10 seconds)
  • Turn on printer and printer ready to use.

    Question and answer
Can the waste ink absorber be washed and reused?
The waste ink absorber is designed for single use. We strongly recommend that when the waste ink absorber is full, it should be replaced with a new one. If a new ink absorber is available on the market you should replace it with a new one. If a new ink absorber is not available in the market and is forced to use it again, an alternative solution is to wash it. Follow the instructions below on how to clean the waste ink absorber.
    1. Soak the waste ink absorber in water. When the water turns turbid, replace it with new water, then soak again. Repeat soaking until it feels clean.
    2. Don't wash it by squeezing, squeezing, or pressing it. The waste ink absorber has an air cavity inside. This air cavity serves to collect ink. When washing is done by squeezing, the waste ink absorber gets flattened because the air cavity inside is gone (see picture below.) To keep the air cavity in the waste ink absorber still present, washing is done by soaking.

How to clean the waste ink absorber

    3. Soaking is done repeatedly when it feels clean, drying is done by drying or aerating.

The absorption capacity of new and used waste ink absorbers is very different. New ink absorber has more capacity than used ink absorber. Washing is done in a forced state.

If the Main and Platen ink absorber is replaced and the printer is not reset, will the printer return to normal?
Because resetting the ink absorber counter is not done, the printer will still be error and cannot be used, even though the main and platen ink absorber has been replaced.

If Main and Platen ink absorber is not replaced and the printer is only reset, will the printer be normal again?
Because the ink absorber counter has been reset to zero, the printer will return to normal and can be used, but in the near future, there will be a new problem where the waste ink will overflow because the ink absorber is full. Waste ink that spills out of the printer will cause unwanted problems.

Waste ink absorber replacement followed by waste ink counter reset is the best solution to repair error ink absorber full. If you have trouble doing it yourself, we recommend asking Canon Service Center or a printer repair professional for help.
